Liminal and Pedaling.

I was deep in the desert this morning riding bikes with friends; I have been mountain biking poorly for about 30 years now. My head was filled with lessons learned while balanced over two wheels, above rocks and cactus, at the edge of cliffs, out in nature.

The Life-Changing Leap.

In the Gregorian calendar used throughout most of the world, a Leap Year is a calendar year that contains an additional day, called a Leap Day, added to keep the calendar year synchronized with the seasons. In use since the 1500’s, a Leap Day compensates for the small amount of extra time it takes the Earth to make a full trip around the sun and allows for a realignment of the Gregorian calendar with the Earth’s position in the solar system.

Grace and Grit.

Chip: I’m continuing my conversation with bestselling author and Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki. You believe that it’s important to “always default to yes,” but how do we do that when our calendar is already full? Aren’t we supposed to become more discerning and a better editor as we age?

I’m-proving vs. Improving.

Chip: It’s great to have you join me on our daily blog, Guy. I’ll ask you a few questions over the next couple days and hopefully we’ll all be wiser for it. Psychologist Carol Dweck says that a fixed mindset focused on proving oneself while a growth mindset is all about improving oneself. Why is her book, “Mindset,” one of your favorite books and how has it made a difference in your life?

What Scares Me About Growing Old.

Having wandered around the field of gerontology for almost a half century, I’ve continually found myself banging into other people’s attitudes as to whether they think aging is a good or bad thing. Is it something to be embraced or conquered? Should we be “pro-aging” or “anti-aging?”

Silly Rabbit or Wise Owl?

Do you feel more like a silly rabbit, or a wise owl? This metaphor came up recently at our personal development workshop, Meet Your Better Half: How to Unlock Your Right Brain. A proverbial “Left Brain Thinker” confessed, “as a practicing attorney for several decades, I’ve always been skeptical about personal development work and dump it all into what feels like the dubious “woo-woo” category.”

“I Can See Clearly Now.”

“I can see clearly now the rain is gone I can see all obstacles in my way Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It's gonna be a bright Bright sunshiny day.”

Don't Resist The Reset

We've all heard the saying,"if it ain't broke, don't fix it", right? That may be good for maintenance purposes, but if "it" can change for the better, shouldn't we be on board with that for growth's sake? At some point, we've most likely felt the nudge to make some kind of change, even getting motivated to the point of almost making said change, only to ultimately Resist The Reset.

Never Too Old to Get Rich.

When I think about what it means to be rich, I often think of something that Dave Brubeck, the late American jazz pianist and composer, who was still performing at concert halls around the world at the age of 81, said when he was interviewed by Hedrick Smith for a PBS documentary.
